SANTIAGO.- According to the latest CERC poll, the presidential candidate for the Concertación should be disputed between former presidents Ricardo Lagos and Eduardo Frei. The poll indicates that citizens have identified the two previous Heads of State as the best candidates to represent the Concertación in the 2009 elections in December.
According to the survey, Lagos was chosen by 23% as the best presidential candidate for the Concertación and was followed by Frei with 17%, José Miguel Insulza with 16% and Soledad Alvear with 13%.
With regards to the amount of support for the DC pre-candidates, Alvear continued to drop from 25% in December of 2007 to 14% in July of 2008. Meanwhile, Frei climbed eight points in the most recent survey from 7% registered during the first poll.
The bad news for Senator Alvear did not end there however. When asked who would be the best candidate of President of the Republic within their party, DC voters placed Frei in first place with 47% while Alvear lagged far behind with 33%.
According to the director of CERC, Carlos Huneeus, "this is a clear indication that the president of the DC no longer has the possibility to become president of the republic, especially after the defeat her party suffered in the municipal elections".
