SANTIAGO.- Police in Maipú arrested a man this morning after he allegedly assaulted the owner of a school transportation van, stealing the vehicle on the corner of Vicaría and Las Naciones in the aforementioned municipality.

According to preliminary reports, the man was accompanied by three other suspects when the driver of the vehicle got out to pick up a child. The assailants apparently took advantage of the driver's absence to board the van and flee with 17 children still inside.

The parents of the children, as well as witnesses, have indicated that the students began to jump out of the moving van and were injured.

The suspects then fled the area and were seen by neighbors who alerted police. Law enforcement officers then began an intense car chase than ended in the arrest of one of the perpetrators.

The children were taken to the Centro Referencial de Salud in Maipú, where the chief of the emergency room, Pablo Roldán, stated that none were in serious condition. Roldán claimed that the children received only scrapes and minor injuries, but were visibly upset by the episode.
