Accident on Avenida Kennedy leaves man seriously injured and causes traffic jam

One of the vehicles may have been participating in an illegal race.

SANTIAGO.- A triple collision on Avenida Kennedy, near Gerónimo de Alderete in the municipality of Vitacura left one man seriously injured and caused an extensive traffic jam this morning.


The accident took place just after 4:00 AM today when, according to preliminary reports, the drivers of a Renault Clio and a Nissan Sentra were trying to maneuver on the road to pass an Audi that was being driven by Mauricio Silva who, acoording to witnesses, was speeding at the time.


According to what some of the witnessnes have told the police, the Audi may have been racing at the time of the accident, which caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle and crash into a tree. As a result of the impact, the driver was ejected through the windshield of the car. The airbag did activate, however, which helped to slow the speed at which the the man's body was thrown out of the vehicle.


Mauricio Silva suffered cuts and several lacerations to his face, as well as more serious injuries, although none are considered to be life-threatening. Silva was taken to the Clinica Las Condes medical center to receive treatment. The man's vehicle also received a considerable amount of damage.
