SANTIAGO.- President Michelle Bachelet took a moment to pause during her first activity this morning to acknowledge the election of Barack Obama as the new President of the United States and wish him success in his administration.

"Please allow me to take this opportunity to publicly acknowledge the election of Barack Obama as the new President of the United States (...).  From this country located at the very southern tip of the Americas we wish him success in his administration", stated President Bachelet.

Amidst roaring applause offered by those attending the international seminar on "The Impact of Primary Education", Bachelet asserted that Obama's main concerns have to do with social justice and equal opportunities, "which he has summarized in his mottos of change and hope and which are certainly the same principles that inspire us here in Chile".

President Bachelet added that the election of the democratic senator as the U.S. Head of State is a "historic moment" that has taken place just as the world is facing serious difficulties with regards to the economy, energy and food.
