Suspect confesses to murder of young man in Providencia

SANTIAGO.- After being arrested last night in downtown Santiago and taken to the Homicide Brigade of the Bureau of Police Investigations (PDI), 44 year old José Mario Ruz Rodríguez confessed to the murder of 25 year-old Diego Schmidt-Hebbel Niehaus who was taken to the Posta Central medical facility yesterday after being shot in Providencia.

Ruz, a bald man, revealed that he was the perpetrator of the attack that took place at 8:00 AM Tuesday on Calle Seminario, where the victim had arrived to visit his girlfriend.  Schmidt-Hebbel, who graduated with a degree in Business and a Masters in Economics from the Universidad Católica, was attacked by the assailant, who shot him in the neck and cut him with a knife.

The victim suffered a serious injury to the carotid artery, which emergency teams at the medical center were unable to treat.
