SANTIAGO.- At 10:00 AM this morning the bells of the San Francisco de Sales Church rang in honor of the last respects being paid to the young man who was murdered during a mugging in Providencia: Diego Schmidt-Hebbel Niehaus.
Approximately one hundred young men and women, business leaders, and members of Parliament, as well as Minister of Interior Edmundo Pérez Yoma, attended the funeral service, which was presided over by Father Felipe Berríos.
Pérez-Yoma remained inside the church for five minutes and commented on his way out that the young man's death had had quite an impact on him.
UDI Senator Evelyn Matthei, a close friend of the man's family, also attended the funeral service.
The National Renovation presidential candidate, Sebastián Piñera, spent a few minutes at the service and stated that he is a close friend of the family and indicated that his son Sebastián attended university with Diego.
After the mass, the remains of the young man were taken to the Parque del Recuerdo cemetery.
