VALDIVIA.- After becoming aware of the suicide of the only suspect arrested for the rape and murder of two young girls on Isla Teja, the family of one of the victims has criticized prison guards due to the fact that the defendant was supposedly under 24 hour surveillance.

“The prison guards did not do their job correctly; he was supposed to be under 24-hour surveillance until the trial.  They owe us an explanation”, Jaqueline Cerón, who is the mother of one of the murdered children, told Radio Cooperativa.

Andrés Muñoz Soto, who has come to be known as the “Jackal of Isla Teja” had been scheduled to attend an oral trial on December 2nd to face charges of kidnapping, sexual assault on a child and murder which, if convicted, may have carried a life  prison sentence.

The suspect reportedly died at 11:35 PM last night after hanging himself inside the Valdivia Prison.
