SANTIAGO.- The Undersecretary of Interior, Felipe Harboe, has called the murder of young economist Diego Schmidt-Hebbel on Calle Seminario in the municipality of Providencia “a heinous crime” that warrants “a severe punishment”.

In Harboe´s opinion, “the case is very atypical for our country”, since “a woman has acted with severe violence not only towards unknown third parties, but also towards her own relatives”.

Although he stated that he did not know what steps would be taken by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Harboe indicated that it seems that the mastermind of the murder, María del Pilar Pérez, would be linked to other crimes such as attacks and threats towards her ex-husband, a former lover, and her own daughter- in- law.

The undersecretary also rejected the “hit man” image that has been given to José Mario Ruz, who fired the shot that killed the young man, stating that in the strict sense of the word “a hit man never reveals who hired him”.
