SANTIAGO.- The president of the Episcopal Conference, Monsignor Alejandro Goic, esteemed insufficient the salary adjustment of 5% offered by the government yesterday to employees of the public sector who are requesting a nominal raise of 14.5%.

"I find a readjustment of 5% truly insufficient with respect to the increase in the cost of living. Although the authorities know and are aware of this and need to analyze it, I believe that with a bit of generosity they could bring it up some", he stated to Emol.

Goic also reiterated that "there are public employees with serious problems because some of them earn much less than others who do the same job".

Nevertheless, he also finds it important that the nearly 600 workers involved in negotiations with the government "cut down their demands" in order to reach a point of agreement with authorities.

"In all negotiations -I went through this last year with the subcontracted workers and El Teniente mine- both sides have to yield some, there can't be a winner and a loser" he affirmed.
