SANTIAGO.- The first time that the national soccer teams of Chile and Spain confronted each other was during the 1950 World Cup in Brazil.

Chile lost with a score of 2-0 to the Europeans at the only official match the two teams have ever played against each other. Since then, Chile has never been able to defeat the Spaniards.

This fact appears to be fresh in the minds of citizens of the "Old World". The Spanish press has dug up several statistics now, just two days before the national teams are scheduled to face off once again.

The European nation has made a significant effort to remind people that Chile has never defeated the Spanish team, stating "Spain has won five of the six matches played against the Andean nation", according to www.ecodiario.es.

The press insists that the only time Chile was able to manage a tie was during a friendly match played on July 5th of 1981 in Santiago, where the final score was a 1-1 tie with Caszely scoring for Chile and Satrústegui scoring for Spain.

The Spanish have also brought up the distance between the two squadrons in the FIFA ranking. "The clash will measure the current leader of the FIFA ranking, Spain, against a team that is listed in 35th place of the classification", they rave.
