SANTIAGO.- The vice-president of the National Association of Magistrates, Patricio Souza, called the stratified salary increase proposal offered to public employees by the government discriminatory and confirmed a "day of reflection" to be held today at the Judicial Branch with 8.500 workers belonging to the sector.

Additionally, the entity has justified the proposal made by Minister Leopoldo Llanos to request the intervention of the Constitutional Tribunal if the stratified salary raise measure is implemented, since it could be in violation of the principle of equality before the law.

"If a measure that we believe is discriminatory is implemented, the grounds would principally be that it violated the principle of equality before the law, this distinction represents discrimination that would go against the Constitution", Souza told Radio Cooperativa.

Souza stated that the judges earn a salary after taxes of between $2,000,000 and $2,800,000 pesos, meaning that it is not known whether they would be given the 4% salary increase since there is a rumor that the Judicial Branch would receive an increase despite the fact that their gross income is above $3 million pesos per month.
