SANTIAGO.- Despite general rejection of the stratified salary readjustment proposal presented for public sector employees, the Minister of Interior, Edmundo Pérez Yoma, has asserted that the government plans to move ahead with the initiative.

"We are going to insist upon a stratified salary, we believe that the highest salaries should not receive any kind of increase and that lower salaries should have a more substantial increase", stated Pérez Yoma.

The minister indicated that he hopes the proposal will be approved although several political sectors have said they are against the initiative due to the fact that they consider it to be unfair, since it would allow for some employees of different ranks to receive the same salary.

The proposal has also been rejected by the public employees themselves, who argue that the initiative would break the workers´ career scheme.

While referring to the matter, the head of Interior assured that the government considers the proposal to be "fair and just" and hopes that it will be approved today by Parliament.
