SANTIAGO.- Only 150 of the normally 350 tons of trash picked up each day have been able to be collected so far by trucks that have been rented by the city and municipal governments amidst the ongoing public employee strike.

"The municipality has implemented an emergency plan to pick up garbage on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week with three trucks during the day and five at night, allowing 100 tons of waste to be collected daily", Intendent Alejandra Vásquez told Radio Cooperativa.

Additionally, the regional government has rented other trucks that have allowed 50% more trash to be collected, bringing yesterday's waste pick-up total to 150 tons.

In an effort to clean up the Municipality of Santiago, the municipal government has created a garbage pick up route that has given priority to residential areas of the city, areas with high business traffic and areas with high amounts of organic waste.

"Nevertheless, we have been modifying the route so that trash can be collected throughout the entire municipality", stated Vásquez.
