SANTIAGO.- The president of the Human Rights Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, Karla Rubilar, has announced that during the first week of December the entity will become exclusively dedicated to analyzing the case of Germán Cofré, who had been identified as a disappeared detainee but was actually found to have been living in Mendoza for the last 35 years.
"For the Commission of Human Rights session scheduled for December 3rd, we have agreed to invite the presidential delegate for human rights, María Luisa Sepúlveda; the Minister of Interior, Edmundo Pérez Yoma; as well as the directors of the Legal Medical Service, the Civil Registry and human rights organizations in an attempt to clarify the facts of the case", stated the deputy.
Rubilar added that "this situation is extremely serious and we have to figure out what happened", since "the credibility of the global victims' advocacy system cannot be jeopardized by this kind of mistake".
Additionally, the deputy indicated that authorities are also interested in investigating whether similar cases exist, "so that appropriate measures can be taken to remedy the situation".
