SANTIAGO.- The Intendent of Greater Santiago, Alejandra Vásquez, has assured that between now and Saturday night all of the trash that has accumulated in the Municipality of Santiago will be collected following a four day public employee strike, which ended last night after a 10% salary increase was agreed upon.
"We hope that the Municipality of Santiago will return to normal by tomorrow night with regards to the garbage that has accumulated in the streets", Vásquez told Radio Cooperativa.
Vásquez indicated that there are still some 500 tons of waste that need to be picked up, but stated that the municipality of Santiago has 22 trucks working on the task while the City Government has contributed four more vehicles and will habilitate nine more trucks tonight in addition to the 13 the municipality has working during the shift.
Additionally, Vásquez pointed out the help offered by the Army to complete the task, although so far there has been no need to use their volunteers.
Vásquez explained that the sectors with highest priority for the work to be done overnight are the civic center of the city, along Alameda, as well as the southeast and southwest sections of Avenida Matta.
