SANTIAGO.- Following the recent rejection of the Housing and Education budgets by Congress, Senators Evelyn Matthei (UDI) and Carlos Ominami (PS) have stated that both will be approved by the Mixed Commission.
Matthei explained that the rejection was a demonstration of support for the PET housing debtors, who have not received any debt relief benefits or payment reductions on dividends, as well as for the historic teachers´ debt.
Despite indicating that the problem regarding teachers is very serious, “I voted in favor because I feel that nothing justifies the complete rejection of education”.
Meanwhile, Senator Ominami stated that the debts from the PET programs were “a grave mistake” made by the military regime and “we must understand that these unpleasant consequences are a holdover from that time period”.
With regards to the historical teacher debt, the senator asserted that the change was instated in a “brutal” manner.
