SANTIAGO.- The Chilean government has put a controversy behind them after yesterday's revelation of a video in which the General Commander of the Peruvian Army, Edwin Donayre, made harsh statements indicating that he would not let Chileans into his territory.

"When the President of the Republic of Peru calls the President of Chile to offer an explanation and tell her that they are going to ask for the resignation of the general, that is a satisfactory response", stated the Chilean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alejandro Foxely.

As such, the minister denied that Chile will take other measures such as a diplomatic protest or a call to report the incident to the Chilean ambassador in Lima, Fabio Vío.

The issue was addressed early this morning at La Moneda by President Bachelet and Chancellor Foxley, although the chancellor stated that the initial reason for the meeting was to determine where Chilean diplomats would be stationed.

After indicating that the incident was a closed chapter, Foxely again expressed the government's "satisfaction" with the personal explanation given by President Alan García concerning the controversial statements made by General Donayre, who –with a glass of wine in hand— stated before a group of civilians and members of the military: "I have taken up the slogan that any Chileans who enter will not leave and if they do leave, they will do so in a casket. If there are not enough caskets, they will leave in plastic bags".
