SANTIAGO.- The Universidad de Chile returned to the field today with laid-back atmosphere of hugs and jokes as the players begin their pre-season training.

The team met at the "Caracol Azul" this morning without meeting their new coach, after Uruguayan national Sergio Markarián turned down an offer to head up the squadron.

Besides the search for a new team trainer, the reunion at the Ñuñoa sports facility was also marked by the absence of backup players for the 2009 season.

Although Everton lateral Mauricio Arias had been expected to show up, there are allegedly some details regarding his severance pay that could be postponing his arrival to Santiago. Nevertheless, the manager of the institution himself, Johnny Ashwell, assured today that the player "will be joining the U".

Another athlete that was also a no-show was goalkeeper Miguel Pinto who, according to Ashwell, was not able to return from Spain where he is currently on vacation.

After physical exams were completed on some of the team members, the Universidad de Chile players proceeded to begin a light work-out session, practicing kicks under the orders of trainer Héctor Pinto, who currently coaches the lower divisions.
