Young woman dies while awaiting liver transplant

SANTIAGO.- After spending a week in the Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital Clínico Universidad de Chile, 21 year-old Yocelyn Quijano passed away last night due to multiple organ failure.

The patient, who had been suffering from acute hepatitis, had been awaiting a liver transplant. Unfortunately her medical condition deteriorated so rapidly that performing the surgical procedure would have been impractical.

For five days, Yocelyn Quijano was listed as a national priority for a liver transplant. The deterioration of her health condition as well as the failure of other organs made the prospect of performing the surgery more and more difficult.

The young woman had been hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital on the 13th of December and spent her last days connected to an artificial breathing machine, also suffering from a stroke.
