SANTIAGO.- The new Undersecretary of Regional Development, Mahmud Aleuy, has responded to criticism from the Alianza after he was accused of being a "political operator" working on a strategy to destabilize the coalition of the opposition's presidential candidate, Sebastián Piñera.

"The President has given me instructions about the work I have to perform over the next year, and that is to destabilize unemployment, not the Alianza", Aleuy told Radio Cooperativa.

Furthermore, Mahumud insisted that the task he has been assigned by President Michelle Bachelet is to minimize the effects of the financial crisis on national employment.

With regards to the Alianza's suspicion of his role in the Subdere, Aleuy has stated that such opinions have no basis in reality.

"The funds belonging to the Under-secretariat are strictly regulated by law, but more than 90% of these funds are decided upon within the regions and municipalities, the regional governments are the ones that determine where investments are made", stated Aleuy.
