SANTIAGO.- In light of the upcoming Christmas and New Year's celebrations, which typically see an escalation in traffic accidents, the president of the National Commission of Transit Safety (Conaset) Emilio Oñate, has issued a call for drivers and pedestrians to work together in order to prevent tragedies this holiday season.

The president of Conaset has reminded the public that "police and inspectors belonging to the Ministry of Transportation are launching a control and supervision operation along various routes throughout the country to watch for speeding and control alcohol consumption using breathalyzers".

Nevertheless, Oñate was emphatic in declaring that pedestrians and drivers are those principally responsible for preventing traffic accidents.

"It is so important to reiterate the call for prevention and self-care, because even more than the campaigns, the announcements we make and the constant supervision being performed by the National Police Force, we really need the cooperation of drivers, pedestrians and passengers to take preventative measures", he stated.
