Doctor begins serving 3-year jail sentence for abortion case

SANTIAGO.- Just after 10:30 AM this morning, 57 year-old doctor Carlos Lund Gutiérrez began his prison sentence of 3 years and 1 day in relation to the crime of consented abortion.  The physician had been hiding from authorities since October of 2008.

Lund was arrested yesterday afternoon just outside the Hospital del Salvador medical center in the municipality of Providencia as he arrived to visit his mother, who is currently being treated there.

Law enforcement officials had been searching for the doctor for three months after he was handed the aforementioned jail sentence as penalty for an incident that took place in 1999 when a women ended up in serious health condition after Lund performed an illegal abortion procedure on her. 

Latest reports indicate that Lund, whose brother Jorge was decapitated in 1998, hid in at least seven homes and spent the entire month of December in the Fifth Region while eluding police.
