Navy mounts major search effort to find man who jumped into Valdivia River

Authorities are still not sure why 23 year-old Juan Carlos Mora García jumped into the water, however preliminary reports indicate that the young man may have been drinking in the area.

SANTIAGO. -  Navy officials are currently performing an intensive search and rescue effort to locate a young man who reportedly jumped into the Valdivia River in the city of the same name, located in the Región de los Lagos.


Authorities are still investigating to find out why 23 year-old Juan Carlos Mora García threw himself into the waters by the Costanera highway.


Navy officers are currently using a motorboat and rowboat along the rivers, while a team of scuba divers and a helicopter are expected to arrive from Puerto Montt within a few hours to aid the effort.


According to some reports, the young man, who worked as an auto caretaker in the area, may have been drinking alcohol along with a group of other individuals close to the coastal highway.
