SANTIAGO.- Following the arrest of the commissary of the Bureau of Police Investigations, Edgardo Bastidas, as well as the former member of the PDI Fernando Torres --both have been charged with bribery, aiding and abetting, as well as obstruction of justice— the Undersecretary of the PDI, Ricardo Navarrete, has stated that his agents constantly face the opportunity to become involved with crime.

“Police work on the border between kindness and evil, in a place isolated from moral order, and therefore they are always exposed to certain types of situations”, Navarrete told Radio Cooperativa.

In response to the situation, the undersecretary pointed out the role being played by the Fifth and Seventh departments of the force which, following the modernization of the PDI, have been put in charge of internally controlling, investigating and following up on reports of such offenses.

“The internal police force supervisors are doing their jobs; they pay close attention and work alongside the Public Ministry”, Navarrete assured.  Nevertheless, the undersecretary regretfully indicated that he could not promise there would not be reoccurrences of such incidents in the future.
