Unemployment rises to 8.5% in December- February trimester

In line with the tendency, a significant slow-down was registered in employment, with an increase of only 0.1% in 12 months.

SANTIAGO.- Unemployment rose 8.5% during the December 2009-February 2009 trimester, with increases of 1.2 percentage points in 12 months and half of a percentage point in comparison to the previous trimester.


The figure is slightly above market estimates, which had forecasted the unemployment rate to reach 8.4%.


During the same trimester of last year, unemployment reached 7.3%, while during the period immediately prior to this one (November 2008-January 2009), the figure was reported at 8%.


In line with the tendency, the Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas (INE) also announced that employment registered a more significant slow-down, with a 12-month variation of 0.1%, while the labor force grew by 1.4%.
