SANTIAGO.- The presidential candidate for the Independent Regionalist Party (PRI), Adolfo Zaldívar, denied today a possible pact with the Coalition for Change – a new conglomerate that has been created by several sectors to back Sebastián Piñera's campaign.

Zaldívar has stepped up to make the statements after the general secretary of ChilePrimero, Jorge Schaulsohn, said that the former DC senator and his followers would not vote for Eduardo Frei, but would rather become part of the new coalition "maybe even during the first round, and for sure during the second".

"The fatal attraction that Sebastián Piñera represents for Schaulsohn is understandable", but "with regards to the assumption he is making about me, I would like to point out that we will be players during the second round (…) I shall not sell myself or change my mind", Zaldívar assured emphatically.

The Member of Parliament also said that "Schaulshon has been aligned with the Alianza for some time now, but we cannot do so due to our ideals and serious political stances".

Zaldívar also rejected the possibility of joining the left-wing coalition, arguing that his "confrontation with the Christian Democracy and Concertacion is an underlying conflict".
