SANTIAGO. - After many weeks of speculation, the ex-minister of the Interior, Belisario Velasco, clarified that many representatives within the Cristian Democracy (DC) have attempted to nominate him to party leadership as president of the DC for the next period.
“They asked me to run, but I said no”, emphasized Velasco, although he did state that “if the Cristian Democracy requires unity, that is where I will be investing my energy”. These were his statements in an interview with Radio Cooperativa.
In the same strain, the former secretary of State affirmed “I am a member of a group ruled by consensus, and do not have aspirations of party presidency”.
Velasco explained that he has made his stance clear to the current leadership of the party and reiterated that “there are people like Marcelo Trivelli, Soledad Alvear, Gabriel Ascencio and the former President of the Republic Eduardo Frei who have the right to run”.
In order to clarify the situation and reach an agreement, Velasco will meet with the party President, Soledad Alvear, this weekend in Maitencillo where she is on vacation.
