Lavín reportedly met with the minister of Interior, Edmundo Pérez Yoma, and Government Secretary General Francisco Vidal this morning.
SANTIAGO. - Former Santiago mayor Joaquín Lavín met with the minister of Interior, Edmundo Pérez Yoma, and Government Secretary General Francisco Vidal this morning to propose the creation of a specialized team to research a way to modernize the distribution of school subsidies in Chile
“I have come to make a proposal to President Bachelet, through the Vice President of the Republic (...) for the creation of a small, high-level, cross-party, executive team that would modernize the way school subsidies are managed and distributed in Chile”, declared Lavín.
“State modernization is something that we all know is necessary” Lavín stated, indicating that it should be carried out “as soon as possible”, beginning with the allocation of resources within the education system.
Lavín stressed that the modernization of the school subsidy system, which would be handled by the team he hopes to be a part of, would need to create a transparent system “where people can use the Internet to know exactly how much money a school received and its attendance records, so that the Comptroller’s Office is not the only authority in charge since, with sufficient access to technology, the people themselves would be able to monitor the system".
