SANTIAGO.- A strike halting operations performed by workers at the Coroner’s Office (Servicio Médico Legal in Spanish) has kept many families from being able to collect the bodies of their relatives from the entity, causing an accumulation of cadavers.
According to the president of the Association of SML Workers, José Morales, 27 bodies have been accumulated in various sectors of the establishment located on La Paz Avenue in the Municipality of Independencia since the strike began on Friday of last week. Over the weekend, only 4 bodies were released to their families, due to the low number of employees that are currently performing their duties.
Morales added that 510 workers throughout the country are currently on strike and indicated that half of them are located in Santiago. The leader also pointed out that the strike has been motivated by a lack of personnel and resources available to perform daily operations.
