Gilles Simon threatens Fernando González on road to the Masters

Gilles Simon has climbed three spots in this year's ranking and is now positioned in 12th place, just one slot away from Fernando González.

MONTECARLO.- According to the new Champions Series published today, French tennis player Gilles Simon is officially rivalling Fernando González and Juan Martín del Potro in his quest to make it to the Shanghai Masters.


Simon took first place at the tournament in Bucharest and has climbed three spots in the ranking to 12th position with 261 points, falling just below Chilean player Fernando González (266 points) and Argentine player Juan Martín del Potro (Nº 10, with 272 points).


Simon has also left Spanish players Nicolás Almagro and Fernando Verdasco behind, both of whom are now tied in 13th place with 253 points.


For now, James Blake, with 309 points, currently occupies the last available opening for this season’s closing tournament.
