Two earthquakes reported this morning in the III Region

According to ONEMI, the second one reached a maximum intensity of IV degrees on the Mercalli Scale.

SANTIAGO.-  According to the National Emergency Office (ONEMI), two low-intensity seismic movements were felt this morning in the Region of Atacama.


Information from a report issued by the Regional ONEMI Office indicated that the first quake occurred at 7:10 AM and reached a maximum intensity of III degrees on the Mercalli Scale.


The intensity of the earthquake was reportedly III degrees in Copiapó and Caldera, while the strength of the shaking reached II degrees in Chañaral and Tierra Amarilla.


At 8:15 AM, another earthquake occurred in the same area, this time with a higher level of intensity - reaching a maximum of IV degrees on the Mercalli Scale.


The second quake reached a strength of IV Mercalli degrees in Vallenar, III degrees in Copiapó, Tierra Amarilla, Huasco, Freirina and Alto del Carme; and II degrees in Caldera.


According to ONEMI, no injuries or structural damage has been reported in the area where the earthquakes took place.
