SANTIAGO. -  Senator Jaime Naranjo (PS) has criticized the actions of the National Congress concerning the conflict in Tibet, stating that “they lacked the courage to condemn China” before President Michelle Bachelet´s trip to the Asian country today.

“The same individuals who have spoken up to condemn Cuba and Venezuela remained silent today, revealing the double standard of their actions”, stated Naranjo.

In his opinion, Congress´ “self-imposed inhibition” has weakened the entity’s image as a State power “even more so since one of their goals should be the defense and promotion of human rights...as a basic and universal moral principle”.

Naranjo added that the fact that Parliament did not object “is even more reprehensible since the Chilean government itself had given an opinion on the matter”.

“Despite this fact, the members of Parliament opted to hide their heads and not acknowledge a reality that is denounced throughout the world”, he said.

In Naranjo´s opinion, “this proves that the intense lobby personally carried out by the Chinese ambassador, Lui Tugin, was successful”.
